Five traits of a seriously good IT architect

Being New Zealand's largest dedicated IT architecture company, we at Cyma know what it takes to be a ‘seriously good IT architect’ and stand out from the crowd.

Here are our top 5 traits that make a seriously good IT architect

1. Curiosity

An okay architect is curious about finding the solution.

A seriously good architect is curious about the problem and the solution. They need to know the  problem, so they can define what a good solution looks like and then fight for the right approach. A seriously good architect knows that challenge brings advancement. They have the ability to question and challenge what has been done before, to constantly learn and assess to make the future better. They are eager to learn - and to keep learning - and seek out new approaches to problem solving.

2. The courage to be different
An okay architect sometimes challenges the status quo, they will go out on a limb where things are clearly wrong.

A seriously good architect is ready to do battle with the status quo, they are fully comfortable leading the pack and challenging themselves to get a better outcome. They are always learning, fighting for change and bettering how we think about and deliver the solution and architecture. A seriously good architect will never suggest a solution because that’s what they think the business wants to hear. They know they won’t make their mark by playing it safe, or telling you what everyone else will - they know how to respectfully tell you the truth, keeping what’s best for the business at the heart of every recommendation.

3. Pragmatic to the core

An okay architect will be knowledgeable about the artefacts, technologies and methodologies that can help add value to their role.

A seriously good architect understands the power of pragmatism. They know that many artefacts, technologies and methodologies are not suitable for New Zealand businesses. A seriously good architect knows how to embrace an organisation’s complex context, and apply just enough framework, just enough structure. They have the creativity and innovation to produce something unique, a  superior outcome.

 4. Technical depth

An okay architect has the skills to use technology to solve business problems. But a seriously good architect uses their depth of technical expertise to deliver a solution that not only solves the problem but makes it simple to comprehend.

A seriously good architect understands that for decades, the IT industry has built a business on confusion - offering “solutions” that are oftentimes not really what a customer needs. A seriously good architect knows how to transform complex technology and processes into a solution their client actually understands and will use. They know that the right solution for a business is one that truly meets the business needs, and that people in the business will use - where true value is generated.

5. Leadership - from the front

An okay architect leads their business, and can instill support in their work and their solution.

A seriously good architect is out in front cutting a path, and inspiring people to follow. A seriously good architect can drive to a common goal shared by a team or community. They excel at communication and can unify the teams on their project - leading them to work together to find the right solution for the business.
